The new 2018 Volvo XC60, one of the safest cars ever made, is fully-loaded with new technology. Steer Assist has been added to the ground-breaking City Safety system. A new safety system called Oncoming Lane Mitigation uses steer assist to help mitigate head-on collisions, while Volvo’s Blind Spot Indication System (BLIS) now uses Steer Assist functionality to reduce the risk of lane-changing collisions.

Pilot Assist, Volvo’s advanced semi-autonomous driver assistance system, which takes care of steering, acceleration and braking on well-marked roads up to 130 km/h, is available in the new XC60 as an option.

A survival story

It was Christmas Eve. Martin, Anna, their son and twin daughters were driving in their Volvo to visit family for a holiday celebration. The car was loaded with presents and the kids in the back seat were excited about the festivities ahead.

The wintery conditions in central Sweden had made the roads icy. Anna and Martin, local to the area, had discussed the road conditions and decided to take their time. Anna was driving with caution. After more than an hour on the road, a car travelling in the opposite direction suddenly lost control, entered their lane at speed and collided front-on.

The impact of the crash pushed their car into a roadside ditch. The family were was able to all get out of the car and wait for the ambulance. Nearby residents and others travelling to their own holiday celebrations, all dressed for the season, rushed to help.
